U.S.A. MOO SOOL CLASS RULES
Overview -

You have chosen a path that will lead to many rewards if you have the tenacity, courage, strength and commitment to stick to your goals.  There are many benefits to training in the marital arts.  To get the most out of our Taekwondo & Arnis classes regardless of which class you are in, it is of utmost importance that you listen to the instructor, follow their direction, obey the class rules and attend class regularly, not just when you "feel like it".

U.S.A. Moo Sool Class Rules for Students -

1Know the rules!  Rules are for your safety and learning enhancement & our school maintains an excellent safety record.

2.  Listen to the instructor and do what he or she says.  They have been on the path long before you and have encountered every question, problem or situation themselves.  They know how to get you to where you want to be faster if you listen with an open mind and closed mouth.  Note:  Don't do anything if you think it will cause you injury.  Please let the instructor know.  If you sprained your ankle over the weekend hiking and the instructor wants you to do jumping kicks, let the instructor know you hurt your ankle and we will have you do something else.  We don't want anyone getting injured or re injuring themselves.

3.  Respect is the back bone of the martial arts.  Respect yourself, the instructor & your style & school.  Don't do anything that will reflect badly on yourself or others.  Remember to bow in and out of the dojang when you enter or leave.  Always bow when leaving the training floor.

4.  Come to class regularly and be on time.  We made a commitment to you to be here and we expect you to commit to us.  If your late, bow in and line up at the back of the class.  If your going to miss a class please let us know.  You are important to us!

5.  All instructors will be addressed by" Sir" if male and "Mamm" if female when asking a question.  Example:  "Sir I need help with my spinning side kick"

6.  Know how every instructor likes to be addressed and do not assume.  Every style of martial arts has there own titles for instructors.   Instructors will also show respect for how you would like to be addressed as well.  Masters 5th degree and up will be addressed as Master ...followed by their last name.

7When the instructor gives a new instruction everyone will say "yes sir or yes mamm" to let the instructor know that he or she was understood.  Examples are: "Lets do 10 jumping jacks" students will answer "Yes Sir".

8.  When class starts your mouth shuts and you line up in rank order from highest rank to lowest rank.  Line up quickly and answer with "Yes Sir".  Be excited to start a new class!

9.  Pay your tuition early.  We have bills & responsibilities too.  Don t wait until the bill is due.  Payment for uniforms, weapons, gear, etc is do when you order.

10.  Testing / Advancing in rank.  -  Your association dues must be up to date before you test and you must pay all testing fees one week prior to taking the test.  Don't be foolish thinking because you paid money you, your son or daughter will pass the test.  If they pass the test it will be because they earned it.  If you/they don't pass, of course you will be disappointed but then you will know what you need to work on.

11.  Jealously has no place in the martial arts. -  Parents/Adults this applies to you as much as the students of our academy.  "Little Johnny got promoted over my son or daughter",  "You didn't give private instructions to my child today.",  "Why can't my child test with the others?"  "My child had to sit and watch the class while others where demonstrating techniques."  Instructors have very good reasons for doing what they do.  If you have a question or concern for the instructors feel fee to chat with them after class ends.  They will be more than happy to talk with you.

12.  Our school uniform is required!    No exceptions.  It promotes pride, discipline and respect.  If you want to wear someone else's uniform go train at their school.  Exceptions to this rule are when we are hosting outside guests, travelers or new students looking to try the class out for one week.

13.  It is the students responsibility to have their own approved safety gear, weapons etc.  We do provide some training gear & equipment but just like when you sign up for baseball you need to purchase a bat, ball, glove, uniform, groin cup, etc. and we expect the student to start to acquire the required gear for the class they are enrolled in.  See instructor for details for what is required for your particular class.

14Go to the bathroom before class starts or at break time during the class.  Remember if you leave class, show respect by raising your hand, asking to be dismissed and bowing out  before you leave and when you return to the training floor.

15.  Do not interrupt the instructor or another student if they are talking.  Raise your hand and we will show you the same courtesy when it is your turn to speak.

16.  No gum chewing or eating during class.  Having bottled water with you to drink is fine during class breaks.

17.  No whining, fussing, or crying in class.  Whining and saying ohh, ahhh, ouch etc while stretching & working out, or saying "I can't do it", "It is too hard", etc is not acceptable, courteous, or a black belt trait.  And this applies to all students at home as well.  No whining or crying to mom & dad to get your way.

18.  If you get injured tell the instructor.  Don't try to be macho and "work thru the pain" etc.  Our instructors will not force you,  be angry with you or think less of you if you need some time out to attend to your needs.

19.  Please tell the instructor if you have any health problems that we need to be aware about or medications that a student is taking or may need during class.

20.  Don't wish....Do!  -  Nobody ever gets good at something by wishing!  I wish I could kick high and do the splits!  Great...start stretching every day while watching some TV.  I wish I was in shape!  Good.  Get your butt into class and start today don't think you need to get in shape...to then get in shape and start the class.  That makes no sense!  Remember time slips by faster than you know....train today and you will be healthy before you know it!  Adults - No one expects a 40 or 50 year old to keep up with the 18 year olds!  Just work at your own pace!

21.  Support the school & Invite your friends & family to class!  -  In order to grow our club and maintain our class we welcome new students and referrals from our members.  Do a little advertising, wear your school T-shirt and tell others about our school.  What better way to enjoy your workout than when you train with a buddy.  And a little secret, the more people you have training the more chances you get to be able to learn from each other and improve your skills!

22.  No member of the USA Moo Sool Association is allowed  to use their skills outside of class unless it falls under a self defense situation.  This of course does not include practicing at home, at seminars, etc.

23.  If you are going to miss a class, be on vacation etc.  Let the instructor know.  And if you are going to stop attending class, even for just a couple weeks, have the courtesy and self-respect to let the instructor know.  If you are having problems outside of class such as; spousal problems, money troubles, health issues, etc. and you would like to chat with the instructor about any personal issues, we would be happy to listen and help support you anyway we can.

24.  Be sure to take off your shoes & socks in  the Taekwondo class and remove all your jewelry, watches etc before stepping on to the training floor.  If you have a foot injury or skin condition let the instructor know and we can make arrangements for you to wear indoor sneakers or wrestling shoes.

25.  Have a black belt attitude!  Never give up & never say you can't.  Give 100%, show up to class often and you will achieve your goals both in life and in class.

26.  Know &  follow the Tenets of Taekwondo & The Student Oath.

27.  Frustration, Anger & Disappointment are a reality in life and life happens here in the dojang!  You may be frustrated with yourself because you cannot learn a technique as quickly as you would like or maybe you direct anger at another student for accidentally hitting to hard or blocking all your kicks, maybe you get disappointed with yourself or you blame the instructor for your lack of skill or development.   All are common feelings and emotions and none of them are wrong.  What is wrong is if you quit and give up.  Failure, frustration & disappointment are a part of life, it is how you deal with these emotions that makes you a true warrior.

28.  Being a martial artist is a life long journey, not a one day trip or a two week vacation!  You will see, learn, hear and experience many wonderful things on your journey.  You will make lifelong friends, learn to face your fears, build courage, have fun, get angry, cry, experience the thrill of victory and the feelings associated with defeat.  You will do amazing things with your body.  Fly thorough the air, amazing kicks, smashing boards, learning how to fall, flip & fight.  You will develop insight into yourself and others.  You will be calm when others are in panic for you will be at peace with yourself.   A true martial artist knows that it is not about the destination but the journey along the way that makes life interesting and fun.  We welcome all students to walk the path of self discovery with us!

U.S.A. Moo Sool Class Rules for Parents -

1.  Parents are allowed in class while the class is in session but we ask you to turn your cell phones off, keep small children quiet and refrain from talking.   It becomes to loud and distracting as all the parents start chatting, little toddlers running around etc.  You will find that your child often looks back at the parents and does not pay as much attention to the instructor as he or she would if the parent was not there.   At testing all parents are invited to watch, videotape & take pictures of the testing.  This is a chance for your son or daughter to show off their new found skills and a chance for you to see what we have been working on.

2.  Don't think because you have watched a particular class that you know what we do or think that is all we do.  Don't stereotype or judge based on first impressions.  It is easy to do and we have all done it.  Example:  You come into class the last ten minutes and the class is sparring and then you think that is all they ever do.  Or you come to class on a day we are doing board breaking or forms and you think...wow...they never do any sparring!.  Or you observe the class as they are doing a skill game and you think...Hmmm, all they do is play games at this school, no real martial art training.  The fact is unless you are enrolled with your child in our family martial arts programs you will never be able to see everything that we offer your child.  Some things in martial art class you will see great benefit in and others you may question, but our goal is a well rounded, confident student who develops excellent skills and outstanding character development.

3.  Get involved!  We love it when parents sign up with their children or sign up for an adult class.  And we welcome your support of our events outside the dojang (training hall).

4.  If you have a question or concern...please bring it up to the instructors.  We promise we will try to work on whatever problem or concern you may have.  If your having problems at home with your son or daughter please let the instructor know so we can take a positive team approach to changing their behaviors.

5.  Do not let your child drop out & stop attending class.  Often sometime during a students training, they will not want to attend class because they feel they can no longer improve or they don't see any improvement in themselves.  It is important to let the student learn goal setting and achievement.  If they wanted to be a black belt then now is the time to remind them of that goal and what they have achieved in class.  This is having them be responsible for themselves and their decisions.  This is not the same as forcing them.  Remember, children would just eat candy bars & junk food, play video games all day, not brush their teeth, do chores or go to school if parents just let them do what they wanted and never pushed them to achieve goals & take responsibility.  Before letting them quit remember all the benefits that they will be losing if they drop out.  No other sport or activity can offer these life-long benefits.

- General Spectator Rules -
