bulletSparring Classes (All Ages)
bulletAttention parents & students.  You may not think so but martial arts is proven to be safer and have less injuries than just about any other physical activity or sport  There are way more severe injuries (broken arms, legs & ankles, torn ligaments & tendons, concussions, & head injuries) that occur in baseball, skateboarding, roller blades, bike riding, football, skiing, hiking, and believe it or not, even cross county running & gymnastics than  occur during martial arts training.   Sparring is an important part and skill of most martial arts, but more so in Taekwondo & the Filipino Martial Arts.  Sparring (simulated combat) is an vital part of all of our martial art programs.  It is a chance for the student to practice & demonstrate distance, timing, control, focus, speed & power while working with a partner.  Safety is stressed at all times.  Our approved protective gear is a requirement, no exceptions.  Pay a few dollars for the gear now or pay a few hundred when someone kicks you in the hand and you get a broken finger!  (Instructor speaks from experience (a 9 year old dislocated his little finger while sparring!)   Please see instructor for our approved safety gear.  We practice many different types of sparring such as;  1/4 speed, 1/2 speed, 3/4 speed & full speed sparring.   No contact sparring for beginners and  light to medium contact for advanced students.   We mix it up too and change the rules of engagement.  We may limit it to just using one technique, sparring two or three people at the same time, kicking vs only punching, etc.  Sweeps, grabs & takedowns are also allowed as students progress.  We do not follow what 80% of other schools follow because this limits the students ability to adapt when actually confronted with a serious situation.  Sparring & sparring rules are based on the age of the student, their level of ability, self control & emotional balance.  Anger & Egos will be quickly dealt with and have no place in the training hall or anywhere else in life.  We do stand up, ground & weapons sparring in both our Taekwondo & our Filipino martial art classes.  The sparring classes are blended into all of our martial art programs.

We start the students out doing touch drills.  The goal being just trying to touch the other person.  This allows the students to start to learn proper distance, movement and timing.  We do this with hands only and then progress to feet and then to both feet and hands.   We then move the student up to punching & kicking drills against another student.   The goal being to try and use what they have learned in class against another student.  Safety is always of most importance and sparring gear is a requirement.  We do not allow contact to the face and only very light contact to the body.  Goals for this stage of training is to use combinations, dodging,  and the ever important skill of keeping those hands up!  The students really love the sparring part of the class and it helps teach them the emotional issues that often arise in life.   (Conflict resolution, anger, lack of confidence, jealousy, respect for self & others etc.)  We always start the sparring by showing respect to the other person through a proper bow, touching gloves etc and we always shake hands at the end of the match.   Showing aggression, anger or other negative behavior is not allowed and the student is asked to look inside themselves when having these emotions always trying to improve their technique, attitude and focus,  instead of blaming others on their own personal performance & shortcomings.  Rank Chart for Kinder Karate Program

Juniors Taekwondo Sparring

Progression of sparring starts with touch drills and no contact, pre-arranged sparring patterns.  Example - 2 kicks and a punch toward your partner, partner backs up, blocks or dodges and then it is their turn to attack with a set of techniques.  This helps the students learn combinations, proper distance, focus of attack and defense etc.  Next step is free sparring at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 &  finally full speed sparring as they get more advanced.  Children do not do full contact sparring and no frontal face contact is allowed.  Only light contact to the body is allowed.  No groin, neck, back of head, kidney strikes, kicks to knees or elbow striking is allowed.  Sparring is very safe and we only allow sparring under instructor supervision.  Our approved sparring gear is a mandatory requirement for this part of the class, no exceptions.  It not only protects your child but the others as well.  About the only thing that ever happens in TKD sparring is the rare bloody nose from a misplaced punch.  Showing aggression, anger or other negative behavior is not allowed and the student is asked to look inside themselves when having these emotions always trying to improve their technique, attitude and focus, instead of blaming others on their own personal performance & shortcomings.  Rank Chart for Junior Dragons.

Beginning students start out with controlled one, two and three step sparring.  Slow speed, 1/4 and 1/2 speed sparring then working up to faster speed sparring when the student has demonstrated more control with their techniques.  Students are also required to wear safety gear.  See the instructor for our approved gear.  As students advance the sparring level advances as well.  Advanced students with instructor permission may do multi-person sparring, speed sparring, light to medium contact sparring, sweeping techniques, grabbing and punching techniques.  Control is stressed and if you have a willing partner both of you can increase the contact level to the body.  General sparring rules are: 1. Everyone wears complete protective equipment & spars at their own risk.  2.  Anger & Egos are left outside of the training hall.  3.  Groin strikes, elbow & knee strikes are not allowed.  4.  Joint strikes are not allowed.  5.  Kicks must be above the belt.  6.  Sweeping and takedowns are allowed depending on skill level of the person.  7.  No striking to the back of head, spine, throat, kidneys,  eyes or front of face.  8.  Light contact only to side of face only with head protection.  9.  No biting, eye pokes, wild punching, blind techniques, or foul language.  10.  Always show respect at the beginning and end of every match and remember to be friends afterwards.  Just remember we all have to go to work or school the next day...so have fun, control your techniques, and play fair so we can all enjoy and learn from each other in a safe, friendly manner.   One last key point to remember is:  Sparring is not real fighting!  There are no rules in a real combat, self-defense situation.  Full contact boxing, kickboxing & even the mixed martial arts (UFC fights) all have rules to protect the players.  Don't think that because you spar well in class that you would do well on the street.  Know when to switch the mental "mindset" from "play sparring" to "real combat" and choose your techniques wisely!.  Rank Chart for Teens/Adult Taekwondo

bullet

Are you ready for some really intense fun?  This portion of the class is a blast.  We offer single  & double stick sparring.  We use padded sticks that have a foam covering around a fiberglass core material.  We also wear full protective gear and it is a requirement that you purchase your own safety gear & padded weapon.  If you want to boost your cardio and lose some pounds in the process this class will do the trick!  Think there is no skill in trying to hit someone with a stick?  It is a lot harder than you think and in this class we cover various drills, techniques, strategy, dodging & covering, takedowns and more.  If you like an adrenaline injection, pick up a stick and put on some pads and lets rock the house!  Warning!  It is very addicting!  Safety equipment includes a specially designed head guard & Lacrosse gloves as a bare minimum.  Elbow & Knee pads are optional.  Beginners start off slow learning to move and target specific areas.  Intermediate & advanced players can bump up the speed and contact level for some really exciting play!  Those interested in competing in stick fighting tournaments should see the instructor.   This is a very safe class....do to the protective gear...however you do get some sore muscles from swinging the stick and trying to not get hit yourself!  Lots of fun for sure!  Rank Chart for Modern Arnis Class
